“Warriors & Princesses in the Red Sea.”
A unique and extravagant multi-cultural presentation, in dramatic theatrical choreography with live
Performances of African Drummers and Dancers.
The Presentation
For the first time in the history of Notting Hill Carnival, “The Red Sea” will flow through the streets covering it in a tapestry of sounds and sight. Models and Dancers will parade with long flowing red organza over their heads, outfitted in red two piece halter tops and skirts decorated with gold coins. The mythical Queen of the Sea comes forward and summons the maidens of the Red Sea. The maidens step and sway to the rhythms of the drums creating the waves and ripples of “The Red Sea.”
The sea calms as the drumming subsides, a conch shell blows as the drummers summon the “Princesses.” They come forth provocatively and enticingly in sequined bra top the colours of gold, bronze, brown and copper, igniting the sensuality of panache. The long skirts with high slits reveal their well defined pairs of legs. They represent the “Wealth of Mother Earth”. Their heads are wrapped in gold, in their hands calabashes filled with flowers and fruits. They offer the fruits to the parting of the sea to God for the safe return of the warriors. Moses emerges to accomplish his mission to part the Red Sea.
On completion of their offerings and the continuous blowing of shells, the “Warriors” come forth in readiness to go into battle. Dressed in loin cloth and red cape that cascade their broad masculine shoulders down to their ankles, their bodies and faces painted with various designs of tribal Africa. In their hands they carry menacing golden spears; they move forward and perform the war dance in offering of the Spirits.
